Annual exhibition of robots in the Convention Centre

Robotic Technologies have been widely applied today. They have become an essential part of medicine, manufacturing, research and military spheres. Robots possess a great number features such as speed, reliability, repeatability, low operating cost which help them to gain advantage over humans. It’s a common knowledge that robotic technologies are rapidly developing. Once being the part of science fiction now they have become an essential part of human life. Nowadays robots can do anything! There are such robots as the pool-playing PR-2 Humanoid, the ice cream making Yaskawa-kun robot, the LuminAR desk lamp projector, the OLIVIA 2.1 mechanical receptionist and many other robots. Such new robotic developments can take over the workforce in the course of time and will take away the humans’ source of income.

Some of the latest robotic developments were showcased at the World Cities Summit (WCS) which was held by Agency for Science, Technology and Research (A*STAR) on 28 June 2010 – 1July 2010 at Suntec Convention Centre.

One of the A*STAR’s social robots presented at the WCS was MIKA. This robot was designed for lifestyle enhancing that is particularly important with the ageing population. MIKA’s aim is to relieve much of their housework and help them to enjoy a higher quality of life.

This robot recognizes speech and has an ability of gesture tracking. These features enable it to understand instructions and perform fetch-and-carry functions. Due to vision technology MIKA can perceives the gestures of people and identifies objects. All useful abilities of MIKA are based on a robotic operation system allowing the users to configure the robot for a wide range of purposes from housework to elderly care. MIKA’s speech recognition engine is able to recognize the commands with the help of microphone.

Another useful technology is APOLLO, a spoken dialogue management system, applied for real robot-human interactions.

All these features make MIKA a good assistance for improvement of healthcare delivery and enhancement of the quality of life.
The world of robots is evolving at top speed and our confidence that only our kids will face a robotic era is shaken. They have already unveiled the robots able to climb the ropes, to play ping-pong and… even robots wives who can draw and do housework.
